Maryland Adventures: VisArts

VisArts is a art studio and gallery located in the heart of Rockville. Founded in 1987 as a resource for artists, VisArts now serves both professionals and hobbyists. Its multi-level building houses art galleries, classrooms, labs and event space. Single and series classes are offered for children and adults in a variety of disciplines, including paint, pottery, glass, jewelry, mixed media, drawing and photography. VisArts provides an outlet for creativity and a respite from the hectic workday.

Classes

The curriculum of classes at VisArts is large and appeals to first-timers, experienced artists and people who just want to have fun. Try out the pottery wheel in an introductory class, create your own watercolor painting or make an original fused glass piece. VisArts even has paint and wine classes, perfect for a girls night out. The center has classes for kids, families and offers day camps during spring and summer breaks. Classes are single or multi-session and include materials unless otherwise noted. Students can also take advantage of lab time outside of class. Visit the website to schedule your class online.

Galleries

VisArts has three main galleries that host rotating exhibits from local and regional artists. The gallery also hosts residencies and fellowships for seasoned and up-and-coming artists. Artists in the program also host talks and workshops where guests can create art with guidance from the artist. The galleries are open noon to 4 p.m. on Tuesday, Wednesday, Saturday and Sunday and noon to 8 p.m. on Fridays. Admission is free, but there is a fee for artist workshops.

Getting There

The VisArts building is located at 155 Gibbs St. in Rockville Town Square. Parking is available nearby or you can take the Metro Red Line to the Rockville Station. Two hours of free parking is available through validation by VisArts.

Fulton Turkey Farm Prepping for Thanksgiving

Sho Nuf Turkey Farm is taking orders for Thanksgiving. If you’re a long-time resident of Howard County, you probably know all about Sho Nuf Turkey Farm in Fulton. You may have even stopped by during Thanksgiving week to pick up a fresh, locally raised turkey for your holiday table. Much of the farm’s original land is now part of Maple Lawn, the master-planned community filled with townhomes, condos, and single-family homes. The remaining farmland is also slated for future development—but for now, Marylanders can still enjoy the tradition of bringing home a Sho Nuf turkey for their holiday meals. Each season, the farm produces about 20,000 turkeys. In late summer, you can usually see the birds roaming freely in the fields.
